NARS Not So Dynamic Duo Concealer.

 

I am a HUGE fan of NARS. When I discovered NARS, I instantly fell in love.  So when I needed concealer, who do you think I went to first?  NARS, of course.  I was so excited to use my NARS duo concealer!  

NARS had the right idea putting two shades in one palette.  One is lighter, one is darker, and there's always the possibility of blending the colors. So they get points for that.

The colors shown are the darkest available: Toffee and Praline.  Sounds good, right?  If only it worked as well.  The formula is a cream that dries down to a powder finish.  The consistency is nice.  The problem is that it does not spread well.  In order to cover a little surface, you have to rub a lot, and you need to use some muscle.  The potential for caked-on concealer is way too great with this product.  The product is therefore impractical.

This is the first time I have been dissatisfied with a NARS  product. I think their idea was great.  But their execution leaves a bit to be desired.

Winter Approaches! Bring out the Body Butters.

 

As the air turns colder and the leaves turn colors I begin slowly resign myself to the fact that winter is coming.  As I prepare to change the wardrobe in my closet, I also start to think about changing my skin moisturizers for the winter.  In the summer, lotions are fine. But in the winter, my skin requires hard core moisturizers.  In the winter, I need body butter.

The Body Shop has one of the best body butters I know.  I could not get through the winter without the Body Shop's body butter.  It delivers heavy duty moisture that lasts. My personal favorite is the coconut, but there are 19 different flavors available.

Note that not all body butters serve the same function.

• Dry/Very Dry Skin: Coconut, Mango, Shea, Hemp, Cocoa Butter, and Aloe
• Normal/Dry : Sweet Lemon, Moringa, Olive, Brazil Nut, Moroccan Rose, Bruti Baby, and Wild Cherry.
• Normal: Strawberry, Satsuma, Pink Grapefruit, Japanese Cherry Blossom,  Vitamin E, and Love, etc.

 

 The body butters are reasonably priced, $20 each.  If you watch, you can get them on special.  They moisturize extremely well, and there is bound to be a scent you'll like.  Or an unscented one (Aloe) you'll like. 

The only downside to these body butters is that the ones for very dry skin can be a little on the greasy side.  A little greasiness doesn't bother me, though, especially if the product works well.  What are your winter must-haves?  Lemmie know in the comments section.

Purge!

 

This has nothing to do with vomiting.  Every now and then every glamour girl has to purge.  I am talking about the dreaded beauty purge.

I dread purging because my beauty products are like friends to me.  I get attached to them. It’s gotten to the point where I want to hand on to stuff until I wipe the container clean.  It’s ridiculous!

Today’s purge is the purge of mascaras.  I am throwing out a mascara from Clinique and one from the Body Shop.  The problem is that I have to throw out the Legendary Buxum Lash Mascara.  I want to use this mascara until every drop is gone.

But I can’t. Mascara is supposed to be thrown out after six months or whenever the smell or consistency changes. I hate to waste mascara, so I try to only use two mascaras open at one time.  Why two?  Because I need one for home and one for my travel makeup bag.  Another way to minimize waste is to use those sample size mascaras that come in the Gift With Purchase that comes with skin care.

So, check your mascara.  If it needs to be tossed, then toss it - no matter how painful it may be.

Legendary Lashes - Buxom Lash Mascara

 

I'm always looking for that great mascara.  You know, the one that adds dramatic length and volume.  I tried so many, I had almost resolved myself to using false lashes.

I discovered a legend while playing one day at Sephora.  After applying Buxom Lash to one eye, I was hooked.  Buxom Lash transformed my little lashes into a long, lovely fan of lashes.  I was so excited that I went around showing my eyelashes to the sales associates.  My real lashes looked like false lashes.  Any mascara that can do that is legendary.  

Buxom is made by Bare Escentuals.  Buxom's formula is paraben-free and vitamin rich.  It comes in two colors: blackest black and blue noir.  It even comes with a little mini-pamplet of instructions! 

 Unfortunately for me, my legend is close to the end of its life.  I've been enjoying legendary lashes for several months, but now the tube is old and is staring to clump.  But never fear, the nearest tube of Buxom Lash is available at Sephora, and retails for $18.  Worth every penny.

Giorgio Armani Acqua diGioia - Liquid Happiness!

 

This is the newest release from Armani Fragrances and my new favorite perfume. Acqua diGioia means water of joy, and it is aptly named. It is a fresh and floral fragrance. It is so new that no lotion, shower gel, or other accessoties have been released yet.

Acqua diGioia’s head notes are crushed mint, brown sugar, and Italian Limone.  The heart notes are floral: acquatic Jasmine, Peony, and of pink pepper.  The base notes are cedarwood and Labdanum.  Unlike many fragrances, every phase of this fragrance is beautiful. I cannot pick a favorite.

Acqua diGioia is so feminine, so beautiful, and so fresh that I want to wear it every single day (even though I have a multitude of fragrances).  It is one of the sexiest fragrances I own. It is also one longest wearing fragrances I wear.  When I apply it in the morning, I still smell it at night. I appreciate that in a fragrance.

I got this fragrance at Dillards,  The bottle and packaging are simple and elegant.  It even came with this cute (but perfectly useless) little blue bag.  This bag will go in the garbage, but I will be wearing Acqua diGioia for a long, long time.

 

ULTRA BLAND? Unfortunately.

 

I am such a LUSH girl!  I love their handmade products and the fact that they are preservative free as possible.  In Ultra Bland, I thought I had found it all: makeup remover and facial cleanser.  It is color and fragrance free, and is said to wipe away everything - even permanent marker.  The sales associate even told me that it could be used to remove stubborn labels.

So I decided that I needed to have a jar of this stuff.  It does take makeup off, and it does so relatively well.  But no better than your average cold cream. What I hated the most about this product was the thick, greasy residue it leaves behind.  This is my pet peeve.  I don't like to use one thing to remove my makeup and then have to use something else to remove the remover!  The residue Ultra Bland leaves behind makes it not worth using.

I am disappointed in this product.  At $29.95,  it's a complete waste of money.  I can find a much better makeup remover for the same amount  - probably less.  I also had no luck with stubborn labels...

Foundation Found! Finally!

     Let me introduce you to my new favorite beauty product: Smashbox's High Definition Healthy FX Foundation. I have been in search of the right foundation for a long time.  And finally, I got a hit after many misses.

    Gotta give love to Smashbox for making foundations in darker shades! I chose Dark D2, which is the shade shown above. It is a nearly perfect match for my skin.

     This foundation is a liquid, and I tend to be suspicious of liquid makeup. The only downside of this makeup is that if you don't use it for awhile it can separate just slightly.  Nothing that rubbing your fingers together will not remedy.

     What sets this foundation apart is the coverage.  It is a buildable foundation. You can get only as much coverage as you need.  This is key because I need minimal coverage.  I can use foundation and have a flawless finish without looking too made-up. Finally! A foundation that offers minimal coverage.

     I am very pleased with the finish that I can achieve using the foundation.  I can get just the right amount of coverage, and the color is spot on.  If you need minimal coverage from a foundation, or need variable coverage, check this one out.

It's October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month!  I am all about shopping for the cause.  Buy beauty products, support breast cancer research and awareness. How can it get better than that?  So, I have compiled a preliminary list of vendors and products that benefit breast cancer research.  If I discover more (and I'm sure I will) I'll post my findings throughout the month. Nutriganics Smoothing Mask - For those who love to mask!

One thing about me, I love good mask.  There’s just nothing like slathering on a nice mask, letting it dry, and looking to see now it cracks when you finally do move your face.  Or to see how much oil it has absorbed.

 

Mask lovers, listen up!  The Body Shop has a the NUTRIGANICS line, which contains organic ingredients and focuses on smoothing skin.  The Smoothing Mask is a great deep cleanser that isn’t over-drying.

According to The Body Shop, this mask is best used to treat your skin and help boost radiance.  It is a deep-cleansing mask that leaves skin feeling silky and smooth.  Community Trade organic babassu oil from Brazil smoothes and revitalizes skin.  Organic mallow flower from Switzerland, Community Trade organic sugar from Paraguay and Community Trace organic olive oil from Italy moisturize and soften skin.  Organic buddleja and thyme from Switzerland help protect the skin.  Damask rose, geranium, thyme, fennel and orange essential oils have been blended together to create a gentle scent.

As a lover of the mask, this is pretty good.  The smell is comforting, like the ground after a nice rain.  The only drawback is that it could clean a little deeper.  Definitely worth a try.

Liquid Liner - Take 1 (Smashbox)

 

    Call me a glutton for punishment...  KNOWING that I can only apply eyeliner with a brush, I keep trying to apply eyeliner with pencils and pencil-like devices!  As of late I have been admiring the dramatic, sharp lines achieved by the liquid liners. I decided to go with Smashbox's Limitless Liquid Liner Pen. (Initally, I tried Lancome's, but Smashbox's was blacker and cost $7 less)  It's a liquid, so it should be easier right?

    Wrong!  I have never been able to leave the house without covering up my application with eyeliner applied with a brush.  I think the applicator tip is a bit too wide.  The curvature gets in the way and leaves me with a bumpy line - not the sleek line that I desire.  I must say, though, that the tip is sharp as can be.  It's made of a spongy material so it doesn't hurt to apply it.

     Of course, I will not give up on this liner.  I paid for it and I will find some way to use it.  It has so much potential! The color is the deepest black.  It dries quickly and does not run.  I could use an eyeliner like this in my life!  It's still very new, but I am hoping that my relationship with Smaxhbox's Limitless Liquid Liner Pen.

note: I must say that Lancome's liquid liner was a little easier to apply. The tip is more streamlined and this could be the reason.

Eye Hope is my Philosphy

 

Everybody needs a little hope.  Eye Hope is an all in one wonder that fights against all things unsightly: eye puffiness, dark circles, fine lines, and wrinkles.  

Eye hope moisturizes without being goopey.  I do not feel that I have to do an excessive amount of rubbing to get the cream to absorb.  Once applied, there is a feeling of tightening and firming.  It doesn't burn, but you can tell that it's doing something. 

A couple of nice things about Eye Hope: First, it is completely unscented.  Second, a little goes a very long way.  Usually, I use only half a pump for both eyes.  I have been using this same container for at least five months. Finally, Eye Hope contains antioxidants, to it helps your skin.

Eye hope was my very first Philosophy product, but it will not be my last.

Too Faced Natural Eye Palette

I love Too Faced, and I love their palettes.  The Natural Eye Palette is a combination of colors that work together beautifully.  The top row is a collection of colors for day.  the second row is a collection for a classic look.  The last row is a collection for night.  Of the three looks, the classic collection looks the best on me.

 

The beauty of this palette is that all the colors work together.  The colors for day work just as well with the colors for night.  Usually, I mix the colors from all three looks to create the perfect natural eye.

 

The palette isn’t perfect, however.  Cocoa Puff is too close to my skin color, and Heaven and Velvet Revolver are way too white to be practical.  Maybe it is accentuated by my skin tone, but Nude Beach makes me look like a five year old playing in glitter.  Either that or I look like I belong on the street corner.

 

My favorite part of this palette is that it comes with instructions!  It has cards tucked inside that instruct you on how to create a look for day, night, and fashion.  I’m always looking for inspiration and tips, so this really appeals to me. 

 

Overall, it is a good collection with some good colors.  I do get bored with it, though, because all of the colors are so similar.  I usually like a bit more variety than the Too Faced Natural Eye collection offers.

Shiseido Lasting Lift Mascara

 

I have a fascination with Shiseido.  I also have a love-hate relationship with their products.  I purchased some Shiseido skincare and I got a maxi-sample of the Lasting Lift Mascara.

Had I purchased this product, I would have been very unhappy.  It is not a good mascara.  It takes several coats to see your eyelashes at all!  I have far more important things to do than apply my mascara over and over and over and over.

The bottom line: It will coat your lashes and make them more visible, IF you apply enough coats.  It will not produce dramatic results. The results will be mediocre.  This mascara is not worth the $23 Shiseido is asking for it.

Ralph Lauren - The Big Pony Collection Coffret

It never hurts to have a little something for the guys! Ralph Lauren has launched a team of frances to match the polo tees with th oversized logo.  There are four members of this team:

 #1 - Sporty -  This fragrance is  mixture of lime and grapefruit.  It has a crisp, fresh smell.

#2 - Seductive - It has a floral and slightly sweet scent. It has a  little bit of a powder finish.  A mixture of dark chocolate and musk. Smells more floral than #3.

#3 - Adventurous - Warm fragrance, maybe with an musky undertone.  It has notes of fresh mint and ginger. It smells slightly floral with a powdery finish.

#4 - Stylish - This one smells leathery and kind of gross. It has notes of mandarin and kyarawood.  The woody scent is prominent. 

I like the idea of having a collection of four fragrances, each with their own personality.  I like the fact that the fragrances are available together or separately. The only thing I do not like s Fragrance #4!  If I remember correctly, #3 is my favorite.  What's yours?

Baci Lip Gloss - from Tocca

 

I am always up for a new lip product.  When I came upon the Tocca display in Las Vegas, I was  intrigued. The glosses looked very luxurious, decided to try the Baci gloss in Salina, icy raspberry.

I love  the smell!  It is light and fruity, yet sophisticated.  Despite the rollerball applicator, this is very much an adult lip gloss.  It is moisturizing, and will leave your lips with a beautiful glaze.

There are a couple of things I don't like about the Baci gloss.  The gloss itself is great, but this rollerbal applicator is horrible.  Not only does it look like it's for kids, but it takes a bit of working to get the ball going. Either I'm rubbing my lips or the back of my hand very vigorously until the ball decides it wants to move. 

I also feel like the Baci gloss goes quickly.  I started using mine on August 5, 2010, and more than half is already gone.  I wonder whether this is a good value for the money, given that it disappears so quickly.

A Month of Murad

I had been eying the Murad Acne Complex Starter Kit at Sephora for quite some time. After using the SPF 15 Mattifying Moisturizer (with great results, I might add) I decided to try the Acne kit to prevent the occasional breakout.

 

The starter kit is enough for about a month, and contains:

• 2 oz Clarfiying Cleanser
• 1 oz Clarifying Toner
• 1 oz Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel
• 1 oz Skin Perfecting Lotion
• 0.25 oz Acne Spot Treatment

First, let me say that I was expecting a set of instructions, or at least a pampphlet orienting me to the products I had just purchased.  I found no such thing.  The items are numbered, but there are two items numbered #1, and two items numbered #2.  Interesting... 

Second, I have a friend who uses Murad, and she warned me that the products she used came with a warning that her skin would initially break out because it was being purged of impurities.  Mine came with  no such warning.  However, when I consulted the Sephora website for directions, I found the reviews!  Some people were having initial breakouts.  Most were very happy with the product though.

I did find a useless piece of paper telling me about Murad's differnt lines. Knowing that I could experience an initial breakout, I decide to stick with Murad for one month.  It's the price we pay for beauty, right? 

Oh my goodness!!!  The first time washed my face with it I thought I was going to cry.  It burned sooooooo bad!  I thought it was a bit harsh, but sometimes cleansers are really strong.  I decided to try the toner.  That was it.  If I was not dark skinned I'm sure I would have been bright red, the burning was so bad.  This was not a refreshing tingle, this was BURNING.  I could not take it.  I will not be using this product again because it is simply too harsh for my skin.  My Month of Murad ended after a single wash.

Stress Relief in a Scrub

 

I am probably way late, but I am just discovering the Aromatherapy, Stress Relief Foaming Body Scrub from the Bath and Body Works.  I saw it at the Semi-Annual Sale and decided to give it a try.

This scrub the combination of a shower gel and a body scrub, but is gentle enough to be used every day.  It starts off as a nice exfoliating sugar scrub.  As the sugar crystals melt, they leave behind a luscious lather, scented with eucalyptus and spearmint.

What I love about this product is that is is two allows me to streamline my shower routine.  Instead of washing and scrubbing separately, I can do both at the same time.  This would be an ideal product for travel.  Unfortunately, I did not see a travel size, so you might have to make your own.

The Gift of Romance

 

I've loved Romance for years. It was the first fragrance I fell in love with.  It's a very sexy blends of florals with undertones of woods and musk.  It is a very feminine fragrance, one that does not go sour or smell like old ladies!  (No offense to the old ladies)  The scent remains true and it stays with you all day.  The bottle and packaging are minimalist, and combined with the fragrance, make an elegant statement.

Unfortunately, I had to  toss out my rancid bottle a few weeks ago.  When I went to replace it, I found a pleasant surprise: there's a gift with purchase!

This cute little travel case is yours with a qualifying $78 Romance purchase at Macy's. It contains :

• 1.7 oz body lotion
• 1.7 oz shower gel
• 1.0 oz eau de parfum spray

The travel case is a nice size, and it has soft sides, which I like (better for stuffing into suitcases).  Of course, nothing makes me happier than matching scents, so I will be in Romantic heaven with the shower gel, lotion, and fragrance.  This truly is the gift of Romance!  And honestly, the travel sizes are enough to keep my busy for awhile.  Until my next fragrance crush, that is...

MAC FALL EVENT 2010

 

The MAC Fall Event is going on now in Tulsa.  Makeup artists and models from around the country have come in to launch the new Fall collection, Fabulous Felines.   The look that my makeup artist chose for me was Burmese Beauty, which is full of warm, rich olives and golds and browns.

 

This is my completed look. My artist gave me cat eyes and dark, berry lips. I love both, but wonder if I can replicate the look on my eyes. The event was a lot of fun. It's always fun to get your makeup done and look all gorgeous, is it not?

Lovin' Lava!

Cream eyeshadows are my nemesis.  They fade.  The crease.  The are a waster of time, money, and pigment.  Listen, I have enough problems without worrying about my eyeshadow fading and creasing!

Enter SMASHBOX. I heard that SMASHBOX revolutionized cream eyeshadows.  So I give it a try, and I choose Lava, a beautiful silver shadow.

Lava looked great in the store.  It looked even better when I gave it a trial run on my smoky eye.   The color was the perfect combination of sheer and buildable.  It was the key to making my smoldering smoky eye.

Seriously, I get all kinds of compliments on my eyes when I wear Lava.  I love the fact that it goes the distance.  It stays out all day long.

The only drawback is that I had to but a special brush to apply it (either that or apply it with my finger).  I am so impressed that I want to try SMASHBOX'S other cream shadows.  I’m a changed woman.

Molton Brown Relaxing Yuan Zhi Bath and Shower Gel

This is my first Molton Brown experience.  I was given a small bottle of the Relaxing Yuan Zhi Bath and Shower Gel, and I was very eager to try it.  The smell from the bottle was a bit odd, so I didn’t expect it to be much better it in the shower.  In the shower it took on a powdery, floral scent that I found much more pleasing.

 

This is not your typical shower gel.  It works into the lightest, most beautiful lather I have ever seen.  Yes, it lathers easily, but the later is not too soapy.  It is light and delicious.  After washing, I felt like my skin was soft, and lightly scented with the smell of yuan zhi.

 

 

According to Molton Brown, the foaming body cleanser and bath foam is infused with yuan zhi, a wild South China plant, which is used traditionally to balance energy (Chi) and soothe the spirit.   The mango oil contained is an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory restorative skin conditioner.

I put the relaxation factor to the test a couple of nights ago.  It does give a nice relaxing shower, and leaves the skin very lightly scented.  It will not compete with whatever lotion or fragrance you may put over it.

One cautionary note: the shower gel is very fluid, and it flows very fast. Be careful pouring it from the bottle of you may pour more than you intend to.

This is a great way to try out different skin care products.  You get to try them for an extended period of time and see if t works before you pay the big bucks.  I know how upset I would be to spend $65 on the High Resolution Collaser - 5X Intense Collagen Anti-Wrinkle Serum only to find that I didn’t like it. So I will try these little guys and if anything really impresses me, I will definitely blog about it!

 

Modern Friction - Love to Scrub!

Origins’ Modern Friction and I have a troubled past.  I used it when it first came out, but I was not a huge fan and I moved on to other scrubs.

Recently, I visited my Origins counter, and I was looking for a good scrub.  The representative gave me a demonstration of Modern Friction, even as I protested.  I was pleasantly surprised.  It was not as rough as I remember.  But it was almost as goopy as I remember :-(

Still, I was impressed enough to take a jar home.  It is a just the right balance of gentleness and scrubbiness.  Modern Friction leaves my face feeling soft and fresh.  The makers suggest using it 2-3 times per week on clean, dry skin.  Those with sensitive skin should massage it over moistened skin.  Add a splash of water, and voila, you have the perfect scrubbing experience!

Endless Summer

If only!  It’s already August, and the Summer is winding down slowly.  School days are coming with the Fall.  Unfortunately, the end of Summer also means the end of Summer scents.

For a few golden, fleeting weeks some scents will be available in a summer form.  This summer form is a variation of the original, but often lighter and/or more floral.

This has been an especially good year for summer scents.  I fell in love with Burberry Summer.  The fragrance is light, and fruity.  It is a very youthful, flirtatious scent and one that isn’t too strong.

Calvin Klein released a summer version of Eternity.  It is beautifully packaged, and the fragrance is warm and natural.  The top notes are floral, but it warms into a nice amber base.  Amber scents are not my favorite.  This one is light, and isn’t too bad.

So, take the last few days of Summer and go check out Summer fragrances.  Get them while you can!

The SMASHBOX Masquerade Collection is now Available at Sephora!

I do believe in love at first sight.  And upon my first sight of the SMASHBOX’S Masquerade collection, I fell in love.  The compact features nine beautiful colors - four shimmer, four matte, and one bronze.  The colors are killer: matte bone, matte soft peach, shimmering black plum, metallic khaki, matte taupe, shimmering navy, shimmering gold, bronze, and metallic cabernet. So far, my favorites are the shimmering navy and the metallic cabernet.

The collection also has two brand new lip glosses: reveal and disguise.

Masquerade’s third item is a liquid liner and lash overlay, an interesting mixture of a liquid eyeliner and a mascara.  The brush makes it possible to be applied as either.  It comes in bronze and teal

I waited patiently for this collection’s release and I was not disappointed.  The colors are spectacular.  The glosses are amazing.  I was not a fan of the lash overlay/liner combination.  Like any relationship, it takes time to fine tuning how things work best. I am still in that process.

Still, though, I am very impressed with this collection.  Others (like the Summer 2010 collection) did not impress me at all.  This one is a real treat for makeup junkies.

Welcome To The World Of Fragrance!

 

That's right!  The Girlie Guide will be venturing into the world of fragrance.  Until this point, I have purposefully avoided fragrances.  Perfume choice is highly subjective, and I didn't think that I could contribute anything useful.

There are several reasons for this shift.  First, I firmly believe that fragrance is a part of beauty.  There simply is no replacement for an unforgettable fragrance.  Second, I have learned so much since I started blogging and I would like to share some of that with my readers.  Third, I don't hesitate to share my opinions on anything else, why should fragrance be any different?  Besides, I am just as obsessed with fragrance as I am with every other beauty product!

In Pursuit of Powder - Part II

 

 

It’s summer and a sister needs powder.  With temperatures over 100 degrees, it’s easy to get oily quick.  In Part I of this Pursuit, I chronicled my misadventures with BareMinerals Mineral Veil and the resulting ashiness.

The real adventure started with the discovery of Laura Mercier’s Smooth Focus Pressed Powder.  I was attracted to it because of its florescent green color.  It seems ridiculous, but this is one powder that does not show!  It does not make me look ashy, but it does help to control oil.  Because it is so very light, it will need to be reapplied throughout the day.

What makes Laura Mercier’s Smooth Focus better than Mineral Veil is the the fact that it is truly transparent.  It is invisible.  It even passes the photo test.  When wearing Laura Mercier’s Smooth Focus, I look perfecty normal in my photos.

Ickle Bot!

 

Just the other day I need a little extra help getting to sleep.  I decided to give Ickle Bot at try.   Mr. Bot is as cute as he can be.  He certainly isn’t your average round bath bomb.  He’s shaped like a little space-bot, programmed to create a veil of sleepiness.  He is flavored flavored with lavender and chamomile, and with his shape, is geared for kids.

Unfortunately, Bot didn’t bring the beauty sleep.  He fizzled our almost instantly and left no scent behind.  I certainly did not feel any more relaxed after my bath Bathing with Mr. Bot was no more relaxing than an ordinary bath.  And I still had trouble sleeping!  

I can’t stay mad at Ickle Bot, though.  He is just so darn cute.  And he did leave my bath water nice and soft.  He’s just not what I expected.

Bliss Lid + Lash Wash Makeup Remover - Good Stuff!

 

Last week I encountered Bliss’  Lid + Lash Wash Makeup Remover.  I was intrigued by the fact that it’s a gel rather than an oil.  I decided to give it a whirl.

Lid + Lash Wash Makeup Remover seemed to dissolve and remove my makeup pretty well, with little rubbing.  The gel consistency is cool and soothing.  Best of all, it leaves no residue!  I was expecting be left with a slimy feel.  I am pleased to report that there was no sliminess!

The only downfall: the removal power would have been a little better.  I wiped my eyes with a cotton round moistened with water and there was a bit of eye makeup left on.  I had to go back and make sure all of that was gone.  

Overall, this is a good product.  Not perfect, but as far as makeup removers go, it is really good.  If you’re willing to go over your eyes twice, this may be a good product for you.  Personally, I’d rather go over my eyes twice  and be done, than be left with a goopy, oily residue that I have to try and wash away.

Makeup Safety from Stila

General Safety Measures Wash your hands before putting on makeup to avoid the spread of bacteria. Wash brushes once a week.  Wash sponges once a week and discard monthly. Don't share makeup. Have Your Cake - Jaqua’s Buttercream Frosting Collection

    

  

    I’ve always had a thing for cake.  Usually, I like mine to include some form of chocolate, but sometimes, buttercream icing really hits the spot.  Jaqua has created the Buttercream line for people like me.

Jaqua’s aptly named Buttercream Frosting Collection is a bit of heaven.  I was introduced to the Buttercream Frosting body butter first.  Does it really smell like buttercream frosting?  Yes!  Is it moisturizing?  Yes!   It’s the best of both worlds.

I have been a using Jaqua for the last four or five years, and I never tire of this soft, sweet scent.  The packaging is very feminine and is enough to make you feel like a princess.  Of all their scents, buttercream is my favorite.

I am currently using the body butter, the shower cream, and the body mist.  The collection also includes a hand creme, a fabulous foot creme, a hand soap, and a hand & body lotion.  The whole collection is delicious.  And it’s not even my birthday!

Happy Wednesday - Morning Survey

Even Better - Clinique Even Better Dark Spot Corrector

 

    For four long years, Clinique has been working on a product to treat dark spots and blemishes without bleaching. Clinique’s Even Better Dark Spot Corrector combats hyperpigmentation.  Clinique claims that Even Better Dark Spot Corrector, which contains CL-302, dramatically helps reverse the appearance of dark spots, age spots, skin stresses, darkening from acne scars in 4 weeks. It is intended for all ethnicities.

    Clinique also claims that their "patent-pending approach works to keep skin looking brighter, more uniform in tone. Actually helps inhibit the appearance of uneven pigment formation. At the same time, special ingredients help break apart the appearance of existing dark spots and whisk them away through gentle exfoliation. It’s an utterly unique, multi-pronged technology that works without harsh ingredients, because we expect you’ll use it for a long time.”

    CL-302, the main ingredient, is a plant botanical that helps to break apart dark spots.  It also contains antioxidants.

    Clinique Even Better Dark Spot Corrector is gentle enough to be used every day.  The directions call for use twice daily, once in the morning and once at night, to even out skin tone.  

    When I heard about this product, I was very skeptical.  I made several trips to the Clinique counter and to the Clinique website.  I was concerned that this product contained bleaching agents.  I was also concerned that this product was not intended for dark skin.  I was assured that this product  contained no bleach and that it was suitable for dark skin.

    I still wasn’t sure so my Clinique rep gave me a maxi-sample, which lasted me more than two weeks.  Even in that time, I began to see my skin tone even out.   At the end of time, I bought a bottle, and I have seen even more improvement.  I will definitely purchase this product again.

Caring For Your Makeup Brushes

 

    Today's post is all about taking good care of your makeup brushes.  Makeup brushes go from your makeup to your face and then back again.  Then they go on the countertop.  They need to be cleaned periodically to keep bacteria at bay and to keep your brushes in the best condition.

    The first line of defense is a spray brush cleaner.  Most cosmetics companies make a brush cleaner, and Sephora does, too.  Most of the makeup artists I consulted recommended using brush cleaner once a week.  How?  Lay a piece of paper towel on the vanity, spray it well, and apply brushes to the paper towel (as if painting it).  Allow the brushes to dry.

    About once a month, your brushes will need a more thorough cleaning.  Because proper and frequent cleaning of your makeup brushes will greatly reduce your risk of infections or irritations,  the experts at Stila recommend this regimen:

1. Use warm water to clean the brushes.
2. Apply either a small amount of mild shampoo, antibacterial soap or brush cleanser.
3. Gently lather the brush and rinse under warm water until the water comes out clear and all makeup has been removed.Thoroughly rinse all soap out of brushes.
4. Squeeze out the excess water in the brushes.
5. Lay the brushes flat on a towel and allow them to air dry.

Be careful keep the water on the bristles, not on the metal.  And remember, clean brushes are happy brushes!

In Pursuit of Powder - Part 1 (BareMinerals Mineral Veil)

 

    Is it really that serious?  Yep.  That serious.  I must have powder.  I need it to suck up oil and I use it as my foundation (even though it supposedly has no color).  

    So I was ready to do cartwheels when I found Mineral Veil, the translucent powder from Bare Minerals.  I was thrilled with the price, $19, and the fact that it’s SPF 15. 

    Mineral Veil comes as a loose powder, which gives me great relief since I shattered my last powder.  The downside to this is that the container  is a bit larger.

    I wore the Veil for about a month.  It was weightless, and it absorbed excess oil pretty well. I got tinted, the darkest shade available.

    Though the color match was pretty good, this powder gave my face an ashen appearance.  It was not too terrible in person, by in photos, it looks awful.  I later discovered that their powders and foundations commonly produce ashy appearance on dark skinned women.

    This was my first skin product from BareMinerals, and it will probably be my last.  I don’t doubt that they make great products.  I have yet to try their eyeshadows, blushes, and lip products.  They might work for me.  Their powder, however, does not.

Concealer Revealed!

 
 

The proper usage of concealer has perplexed me for quite some time now.   But dark circles under the eyes are nor glamourous.  Every glamour needs to know how to apply concealer.  In the last few weeks, I’ve been doing my research and I’ve decided to share my findings with you. 

• It’s best to start with a concealer palette, preferably one that has two shades in it.
• After moisturizer, but before foundation, mix the two shades together, using a bit more of the lighter shade.
• Dot it along the underside of the eyes with fingers.
• Use concealer brush to gently blend the concealer into skin.

Once the concealer is finished, add your foundation.  I hear that loose powder foundations work extremely well with concealer and give a very natural look.

Reflections on MAC to the Beach

 

The MAC to the Beach collection is a beautiful collection of summer colors that instantly transport you to a beach vacation.  The collection is dominated by colors of summer: peaches, oranges, pinks, blues, greens, and bronzes.  The packaging reflects the life of the sea: shells, seahorses, and marine life.

The collection was so beautiful that items started selling out the first day.  Thankfully, I was able to get what I wanted.

The Spa at The Mirage - a Delicious Experience!

     Wow! I have to say that Las Vegas is amazing! There is so much to see and do that it can seriously wear a glamour girl out. Thankfully, there are plenty of spas around to help keep you feeling as gorgeous and glamourous as ever.

    Today I visited The
Spa at The Mirage. It was a beautiful place, with an assortment of spa treatments. They also had a boutique of the cutest bath and body products! There was a line that focused on producing bath bombs and body scrubs that looked like cupcakes and ice cream.  

Another
line focused in food-based products. The moisturizing body milk was made with mild (but smelled infinitely better). The strawberry body cream had strawberries in it. It wasn't completely natural, but it was based completely on food. My kind of bath and beauty line.

So if you ever find yourself in Vegas and you need a pick-me-up, consider The Spa at The Mirage. I thought it was cool.

A Not So Perfect World Creamy Body Cleanser with White Tea

     
 
 
 

     Silver Tipped White Tea... it just sounds like perfection, doesn't it?  Well. that's  the secret of Origins’ Perfect World collection.  Every item contains silver tipped white tea, rich in anti-oxidants.  The body cleanser is specifically formulated to be non-drying.  It contains shea butter, apricot kernel oil, sweet orange, and glycerin to soften and moisturize skin.

        Generally, I am a big fan of the Perfect World Collection.  Once upon a time there was a lip balm that was sooooooo wonderful (it was discontinued by the wicked witch).  Like the rest of the collection, the body cleanser smells wonderful.  However, I am disappointed in the overall performance of A Perfect World Creamy Body Cleanser.  I find that I need to use a lot in order to get a decent lather.  It does provide a reasonably pleasant showering experience, but it leaves that rough residue on you skin - just like cheap soap.  It also leaves a ton of soap scum on my tub.

        I am really disappointed in this product.  I have never been dissatisfied with anything from Origins, and I certainly never expected to be dissatisfied with a product from the Perfect World collection.  Given the performance of this product, I will not be purhasing it again.

    Hold everything!  Aveda Control Paste does just that.   It is designed to accommodate a number of looks.  Control Paste is equally capable of making you hair lay down as making your hair stand up.  The choice is yours. 

    Control Paste can be applied to wet or dry hair, and offers a pliable hold.  It will not tear your hair out when combed.  I use it to slick down unruly edges around perm time.  It helps to lay the hair down (and keep it there), giving me a more polished look.  It can also be be used on ponytails and braids to control stray hairs.

    I really love this product.  It gives the perfect pliable hold.  I also like the fact that it leaves my hair soft and pliable, but under control.  Control Paste doesn’t really have any sheen, and I think that makes it less noticeable.  The formula is non-sticky, and is good for all hair types.   The smell is a bit woodsy, so Control Paste is a favorite for guys, too.

Tarina Tarantino Limited Edition Line

   

    Immediately after the launch of her cosmetics line, Tarina Tarantino is making a splash with her Limited Edition Fashion Collection.  There are four themes, each theme including a lip gloss, an eyeshadow, and a lipgloss ring.  Tarina describes her Fashion Collection  this way:

 Inspired by Gothic style and 70s punk rock, the Victorian Punk Collection references Tarina's love of turn-of- the-century haberdashery and dress. These influences appear in hand-printed, scrimshaw skull cameos surrounded by Swarovski crystals, then layered with charms and pearls. The rich Victorian colors of red, black, and purple combine to create a story of romance and gothic fantasy.

 During her first trip to Japan, Tarina found herself immersed in a futuristic culture of cuteness that immediately inspired her to create a collection celebrating the high-tech style in Tokyo, including "Hardcore" fashion, and cosplay (costume play inspired by Japanese Anime). The neon colors represent Tokyo's skyline, which she watched from her room at night.

 Tarina found inspiration for the Electric Butterfly Collection from acid bright, op-art posters from the '60s and Art Nouveau illustrations from the early 1900s. The art from these eras, with their highly stylized images and curvilinear shapes, references the patterns in butterfly wings, accentuated through vibrant, colored-crystal accents.

Taking a colorful inspiration from her grandmother's vintage jewelry box, Tarina's Candy Cameo Collection features neon-colored cameos with glossy hearts and bows, accented with black lacquer beads. Each piece is playful with vibrant colors mixing harmoniously to create a fantastical, yet nostalgic, feel.

Bibarucci was inspired by two of Tarina's Tarantino's favorite fashion icons combining sexy, playful designs from the Disco era, with '60s rock 'n' roll decadence featuring black, gold, and leopard print with Egyptian accents.

 
  The colors are spectacular, and the palettes are lots of fun to pull from your purse (trust me)! Get them while they're available! And hot!

It’s that time of year again: 

Semi-Annual Sale Time!  

Yes, my fellow bath and beauty enthusiasts, the Semi-Annual Sales start this week.  The Bath and Body Works (BBW) Semi-Annual Sale begins on Friday, June 11.  The Semi-Annual Sale at the Body Shop begins on Monday, June 7.  

Shoppers, beware!  The sales are much shorter this year.   The sales will run for two weeks only.  If you want to catch the bargains, you will have to move fast.

For those of you that can’t wait, make your way to BBW for a head start.  BBW has tables of clearance products right now.  You can catch clearance before the sale starts.  So, I urge you to swing by BBW, check out the clearance, and get geared up for next week.  While you're there, look out for the current sale: BUY 3 SIGNATURE COLLECTION ITEMS, GET 3 FREE!!!!
